Guest Musicians

Hálá World Music Ensemble has an extensive group of guest musicians who are available* to perform at concerts including: Cecelia Calloway – vocals, Paul McGuire – saxophone & assorted recorders,  Michael Rabinowitz – jazz bassoonist, Mark Moore (video | facebook) – bass, Jon Truelson (video) – vocals, keyboards, electric & acoustic guitar, Paul Mills (video) – drums, Jahmés Tony Finlayson – Djembe drum & percussion, Jimmy Wilson – vocals, George Blackmon – vocals & keyboards, and many others!

Paul Mills has been a core member, with his brother Michael, of the Children of the Sun World Percussion Ensemble since the late ’70’s, and also spent several years during the 80’s and 90’s performing with his brother Michael & composer/pianist Peter Edwards as an integral part of New Music International World Drum & Music Ensemble (NME). Paul is also co-founder with his brother Michael of The Mills Brothers II Band.

He is a professional drummer/vocalist and tutor with a deep history of recording and live performances. Work experience includes: ‘Tribute to Ella’ with Mercer Ellington & His Orchestra (son of Duke Ellington, Average White Band, Daryl Hall, Phyllis Hyman, George Benson, Najee, Wendy Moten, Phil Perry, Morris Pleasure, Chiele Munnucci and most recently Hue & Cry.

Paul has also appeared on the following recordings: Najee’s ‘Tokyo Blue’ CD; Marion Meadows ‘Keep it Right There’ & ‘Body Rhythm’ CD’s; Norman Connors ‘Passion’ CD; and the Hue & Cry ‘ Open’ & ‘Christmas’ CDs. (2009)

Michael Rabinowitz is a cutting edge bassoonist. He has been improvising for over 30 years. His mastery of swing, be-bop, world, free form and classical music has lead to collaborations with artists such as Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, John Hicks, Elvis Costello, Wynton Marsalis, Ira Sullivan, Red Rodney, Guus Janssen, and Chris Potter.

Michael is a founding member of the Charles Mingus Orchestra and the leader of his own quartet Bassoon in the Wild. He plays at major jazz festivals, clubs and concert venues around the world. He conducts master classes in improvisation that provide hands on experience for students. Michael’s multiple recordings and Youtube videos are a source of inspiration for aspiring improvisers.

* Availability is based on each musicians schedule. Some of our guest artists travel extensively and are available only at certain times of the year.

Jahmés Finlayson

Jahmés Tony Finlayson is an accomplished musician, performing artist, storyteller and workshop facilitator. His interactive and engaging presentations include music, songs, stories and movement of Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas and beyond. He has presented numerous concerts and assemblies at schools, libraries, religious institutions and universities across the country and his programs are enthusiastically received by young and old alike. He has facilitated workshops and therapeutic music sessions for wellness conferences and several peer mediation and conflict resolution organizations. Jahmés also conducts classroom sessions and workshops on Creativity, Creative Use of Found Objects, and Instrument Making. He is the musical director of the deaf and hard of hearing drum ensemble, Children of the Sun, at the Center fir the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and has led a variety of drumming workshops for deaf and hard of hearing and special needs children and adults. He has been affiliated with the world renowned Ko-Thi African Dance Company as poet, musician and prop designer for more than two decades and is a founding member of One Drum.
